  1. oaty Apple crumble

1 bag or 6 Bramley apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks
1 bag or 6 eating apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks
    85g caster sugar
    100g soft light brown sugar
    50g honey
    250g pack butter
    300g oats
    300g plain flour

  2. When making an apple pie, set aside 1/4 of pastry and roll it in a tablespoon of oats. Use the plain pastry for the base and the oaty pastry for the lid. Gives the pie a nice texture.

  3. I found a wicked recipe for microwave flapjacks – it takes longer for them to cool enough so you don't burn your mouth than it does to prepare and cook them. I kid myself that the oats are helping our cholesterol levels and the dried fruit part of our 5-a-day (conveniently forgetting the sugar and fat!)

  4. I had a very strange dish in the Middle East that tasted like a cinnamon spiced porridge and was served with some meals. It was made of ground meat, oats and spices and possibly a little honey as it was vaguely sweet all of which was pounded to a paste or cooked until completely mashed. It's the most odd thing I have ever been served as on its own it was not unpleasant but it did not seem to compliment anything on the table. I've found similar recipes called "Haleem" but they all appear more savoury in flavour than my encounters.

  5. Mix oats with an apple (grated, put in processor) and banana mashed together, mix with some raisins and bake in oven for about 10 – 15 min x

  6. My favourite has to be my own recipe cherry and almond flapjacks. I've not made them in so long – must remedy that now that I've actually thought of them – they are really delicious with a cup of tea!

  7. MELTING MOMENTS

    4 oz butter or margarine

    3 oz caster sugar

    1 egg yolk

    Few drops vanilla essence

    5 oz self raising flour

    Porridge oats

    Heat oven to Mark 5/ 375 F

    Grease 2 baking trays

Cream the butter and sugar together and beat in the egg yolk. Flavour with the vanilla essence and stir in the flour to make a stiff dough. Divide into 24 portions. Roll each piece into a ball and roll in the porridge oats. Place on the baking trays and bake for 15-20 minutes. If you like you can decorate the biscuits with a piece of glace cherry. Cool the biscuits on the tray for a few moments before lifting on to a cooling rack.
