Visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina on a day trip from Dubrovnik

During our recent trip to Dubrovnik, we decided to take a day trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina to visit Mostar and Kravice waterfalls. It’s an easy way to see another country in a single day and experience something completely different. We booked through the local information office near Pile Gate in Dubrovnik, which felt safe and reliable. Having an organised tour made the day stress-free from start to finish.

Cost, Pick-Up, and Early Start

The trip cost around £85 per person, including hotel pick-up. While meeting at a central pick up point can be cheaper, we felt saving a few pounds wasn’t worth the hassle. We were picked up directly from our hotel Dubrovnik Palace Hotel at 6:30 am. It was an early start, but it made sense for a long day of travel.

Crossing the Border Made Easy

The journey to Mostar covers quite a few kilometres and includes a border crossing into Bosnia and Herzegovina. You will need your passport to cross the border. Border checks usually take about one hour, but travelling with an escorted tour made it effortless. We stayed comfortable in our air-conditioned coach while the guide handled all the paperwork. After crossing the border, we stopped briefly for breakfast before continuing to Mostar our first stop in Bosnia and Herzegovina

When travelling across borders, having mobile data is essential. It’s useful for emergencies, sharing photos with friends, navigating new areas, and using social media without racking up huge roaming fees.

Exploring Mostar with a Local Guide

Mostar, in the heart of Bosnia, feels like stepping into a living storybook. The city has a strong Ottoman vibe, with Turkish-style architecture, bazaars, and traditional cafés.

We started with an hour-long walking tour led by our guide. I highly recommend this as you can see all the main sights easily without wasting time allowing you to make the most of your day trip. It was the perfect way to learn about the city’s history and culture.

Things to Do in Mostar

• Walk across the Stari Most (Old Bridge)
• Watch trained divers plunge into the Neretva River in the dramatic “lasta” dive
• Visit the War Museum
• Explore the cobbled streets of the Old Town
• Shop at Bazar Kujundziluk, a car-free Ottoman-style market
• Enjoy a cup of Bosnian coffee
• Stroll along the Neretva River
• Visit the Crooked Bridge (Kriva Cuprija)
• Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque

If you are lucy on the day you may see one of the highlights which is watching trained divers jump from the Old Bridge. After collecting donations from the crowd, they dive into the icy Neretva River, often performing a head-first dive called the “lasta.” It’s a long-standing tradition and a real crowd-pleaser.

After the guided tour, we had free time to shop, enjoy lunch, and soak up the atmosphere before heading back to the coach for our next stop.

Kravica Waterfalls – Nature at Its Best

Our final stop was Kravica Waterfalls, tucked away in the lush Bosnian countryside. It’s one of the most beautiful natural spots in the region.

When we arrived, we passed through the entrance area, where there are small stalls and ticket office where you can purchase the entrance tickets. You can also purchase tickets online to save time and avoid the queues.

You can reach the waterfalls either by mini train or by taking the scenic walk down. The walk is down hill so sturdy shoes, sun protection, a hat and carrying water is highly recommended. The queue for the train is long, so we chose to walk — and it was worth every step. The views along the way are stunning and added to the experience. As we neared the waterfalls, we could hear a thunderous roar.

At the bottom, there are plenty of options:

• Relax on the beach and watch the waterfalls
• Take a boat ride close to the water falls
• Swim in the cool pools
• Grab drinks and snacks at the cafeteria and bar
• Cycling
• Hiking
• Canoeing

Because we were on an escorted tour, our time at Kravica was limited. We didn’t swim or take the boat ride, but simply strolling around and listening to the roar of the waterfalls was mesmerizing. Sometimes, just being there is enough. You could easily spend a day here, swimming, sunbathing, boating and enjoying a picnic.

Is This Day Trip Worth It?

Absolutely. It’s a long day, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Travelling with a guided tour removes the stress of transport and border crossings, so you can focus on enjoying the sights.

A day trip to Mostar and Kravica Waterfalls only scratches the surface of what Bosnia and Herzegovina has to offer. There’s so much more to explore — from historic towns and hidden waterfalls to scenic landscapes and vibrant culture. It’s a country well worth discovering further.
