In this post I am going to share some simple decluttering tips for your home. Decluttering in your home is imperative in life. Over time, we all accumulate clothes, homeware, gadgets, and other things we no longer need or use. There are numerous reasons to declutter such as downsizing, renovating, making room for something new, or having a general declutter.

How to start to declutter?

When planning a decluttering project it is important to start with one room at a time. Pick up 4 boxes and mark them as trash, charity, recycle and for sale. Sort the items out one cupboard or drawer at a time, and then place them in the appropriate box. This is a very useful system to organise the items so don’t skip this step.

Clothes

Sort your clothes by charity, recycling, or selling. You can sell your clothing and unwanted gifts online on eBay or Vinted. Clothing for charity should be clean and in proper condition. Ant items you declutter can sold. You can list items for sale easily. It’s easy to create a listing. Take a photo of the item and upload it to the appropriate website. Be sure to include the asking price and shipping instructions in the item description.

Bedding, towels, blankets and duvets

Bedding, blankets and Duvets can be taken to a homeless shelter. When donating these items make sure they are washed and clean and packed in plastic bags for easy storage. There are many animal shelters who will accept old towels too so make sure you check in your area.

Electronic and kitchen gadgets

You can either donate working gadgets to the appropriate charity. Taking broken electrical items to recycling centres is a safe way to dispose of them. Before disposing any phones or tablets make sure you delete any personal data off for security reasons. If the phone or gadget is in proper working condition, you can pass it along to friends and family. These items are expensive and would be appreciated by someone who cannot afford the most recent version. A child does not need the latest model of phone so servicing an older model with a new sim-only plan for children is a great way to repurpose it.

Furniture, office and household items.

It is possible to store all your belongings in external storage facilities. Now Storage Basingstoke offers services such as these. These storage facilities are ideal for business owners and people with home offices who want to store their equipment. They are also helpful for people moving home who need temporary storage, people downsizing who need extra storage, and anyone who needs more storage space.

Organising storage

Put things in baskets, use drawer organizers and keep only things that you need every day out to create more space. Shoe racks are a great way to keep shoes organised and tidy. If you are short on space organise your clothes into winter and summer. You can then pack away the seasonal clothes you don’t need in compression bags so they don’t take up as much space. Keep your home clutter-free by putting things back after using them.

Books and stationery

Separate surplus books into children’s, adult, and genre categories. In addition to donating books and stationery to playgroups, you can also donate them to charities that collect them for third world countries. You can also take them to charity shops. Additionally, books can be sold online.

Brutality is key

Items that are broken, damaged, or useless should be thrown away. The more items you hoard, the more clutter you will have. The key to decluttering is to get rid of things you never use. Once your home is decluttered, vow to keep it tidy and clean.

How do you declutter and store your items? Please do share any of your tips on how to declutter your home in the comments below. You may also like to read

My plan to declutter our home has long been overdue and this post is really helpful. I have a few beddings and duvets that we no longer use and I love the idea of donating them to a homeless shelter. Will check with animal shelters too.

Homeless shelters will definitely appreciate the donations but just make sure the stuff is clean. I bag the sheets pillowcase, pillow and duvet/ blanket and make a pack for convenience.

Great advice. I really need to do more of this myself! You can make a few pounds selling old phones, tablets, etc. through websites such as Music Magpie if you don’t want to just give them away.
