Day 1: Discovering Singapore’s Diverse Neighbourhood’s
In this post I am going to cover my ultimate guide to Singapore Day 1.
In January 2024, we embarked on our trip of a lifetime to Asia. Our first stop was Singapore where we stayed for 4 nights. I will cover Singapore in three days. Get ready for an adventure-packed day in Singapore! We’ll explore historic temples, vibrant streets, and iconic landmarks. Let’s dive in.
Morning: Chinatown

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple
Start your day at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. This majestic temple houses a sacred tooth relic of Buddha. The intricate architecture, with its elaborate carvings and vibrant colours, is stunning. Take your time to explore the serene halls and snap some photos of the beautiful surroundings. On the top floors of the temple, visitors can find beautiful historical exhibits, along with a small souvenir shop and a place to purchase offerings for temple prayers.
Sri Mariamman Temple

Next, visit the Sri Mariamman Temple. It’s the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore, built in the Dravidian style. The colourful and detailed gopuram (tower) is a visual treat with its ornate sculptures.
Tourists can enter the temple, but before doing so, they must remove their shoes and place them in the provided storage racks outside. Alternatively, visitors can carry a plastic bag to store their shoes and place them in their rucksack or bag if they are valuable. I strongly recommend carrying a couple of spare pairs of socks, as they can become dirty when walking around barefoot. Additionally, visitors are expected to dress modestly as a sign of respect. The temple is a beautiful sight, so be sure to capture its beauty for Instagram and immerse yourself in its rich history.
Chinatown Complex Food Centre
Feeling hungry? Head to the Chinatown Complex Food Centre. Here, you can try delicious Chinese vegetarian dishes like carrot cake (chai tow kway) and vegetarian dumplings. Don’t forget to sample the famous Ice Kachang –shaved ice dessert. In a bowl cooked mixed beans are topped with shaved ice and sweetened with colourful syrups. On top of this condensed milk and a variety of fruit toppings are added. The bustling atmosphere and diverse food options make it a must-visit and a very unique experience.

Pagoda Street
After your meal, stroll down Pagoda Street. This lively street is perfect for shopping and people-watching. Pick up some unique souvenirs from Singapore, explore the eclectic shops, and enjoy the vibrant street life filled with traditional Chinese lanterns and decor.
Midday: Kampong Glam Singapore
Sultan Mosque
Take a short walk or train ride to Kampong Glam. Begin at Sultan Mosque, a significant landmark of Singapore with its impressive golden dome. The mosque’s stunning architecture and peaceful ambiance offer a serene escape. It’s a serene and photogenic spot, ideal for some reflective moments.
Tourists are allowed to enter the mosque, again like entering any place of worship, you are required to remove your shoes and dress modestly. The mosque staff will lend tourists long skirts to cover their legs if they are wearing shorts. Please be respectful when entering these places of worship.

Arab Street
Just around the corner, you’ll find Arab Street. This area in Singapore is known for its textiles and carpets. Wander through the shops filled with colourful fabrics, intricate designs, and traditional wares. The vibrant atmosphere and friendly vendors make it a delightful experience.
Haji Lane
Don’t miss Haji Lane. This narrow lane in Singapore is famous for its street art and quirky boutiques. Each wall is a canvas, showcasing stunning murals and graffiti. It’s a great place to capture some unique and vibrant shots while exploring the eclectic mix of shops and cafes.

Bugis Street
Finish your Kampong Glam visit at Bugis Street. It’s one of the largest street markets in Singapore, offering a wide variety of items from fashion to accessories. Shop for trendy fashion items, indulge in some street snacks, and enjoy the energetic vibe of this bustling market.
Afternoon: Little India
Tan Teng Niah
Take a train or walk to Little India. Start at Tan Teng Niah, the last surviving Chinese villa in the area. It’s bright and bold colours, with intricate detailing, make it a perfect Instagram spot. The vivid hues and charming architecture stand out beautifully against the urban backdrop. You cannot enter the villa, viewing is from the outside only.

We stumbled across the Flavours restaurant adjacent to the Tan Teng Niah and stopped to have a delicious Thali. There was an extensive menu to choose from.

Tekka Centre
Next, head to Tekka Centre. This bustling market offers a variety of street food. There are many stalls offering a wide range of cuisine. Try some Indian vegetarian delicacies like masala dosa, Vegetarian Thali, or roti prata. The rich aromas and flavours are sure to delight your taste buds. The vibrant market scene adds to the lively experience. Sipping refreshing glasses of cold lassi, we enjoyed this drink made with whisked yoghurt and water, served in both salty and sweet variations.
Evening: Marina Bay in Singapore
Merlion Park

Make your way to Merlion Park by early evening. The iconic Merlion statue, with its half-lion, half-fish design, is a must-see in Singapore. Capture the classic shot with Marina Bay Sands Hotel in the background. As the sun begins to set, the view becomes particularly spectacular, casting a golden glow over the bay.
Light Show
Stay for the Spectra light and water show. It runs at 8 PM and again at 9:30 PM. The dazzling display of lights and music over the bay is mesmerizing. The combination of water jets, lasers, and projection imagery creates a magical atmosphere. Perfect for a stunning night photo.
Night: Clarke Quay
Dinner at Clarke Quay
End your day at Clarke Quay. This riverside area is lively at night, with its array of restaurants and bars along the waterfront. Choose from a variety of dining options, including vegetarian-friendly places, and enjoy a delicious dinner with beautiful views of the river. The vibrant nightlife and scenic surroundings make it a perfect end to your first day.

Singapore’s diversity shines through in its neighbourhood’s. Each area offers a unique experience, from cultural landmarks to bustling markets. Enjoy your first day and get ready for more adventures in my next post.
Although the day sounds packed, it’s doable. The distances between attractions are either a short walk or 1-2 MRT stops away. Since we used our three-day Singapore tourist pass (the red one), traveling around Singapore was easy. The MRT and buses are user-friendly, with clear signage, making navigation a breeze.
